Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Technology

The Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Technology is increasingly critical as volumes of spent batteries grow.

Proper recycling recovers valuable materials — graphite, lithium‑metal oxides (like NMC/NCA), copper, aluminum — while preventing environmental hazards.

As a supplier of full recycling lines, Guanma Machinery offers equipment and process solutions to turn waste batteries into reusable raw materials safely and efficiently.

Recycling Methods Type

Recycling of spent lithium‑ion batteries typically combines mechanical processing, pyrometallurgical treatment, and hydrometallurgical processes.

Mechanical processing (pre-treatment): Batteries are discharged for safety, then dismantled, shredded or crushed.

Pyrometallurgical route: Using thermal treatment to decompose binders and organics, smelt metals, and produce metal alloys or oxides.

Hydrometallurgical processing: Black mass or thermally-treated materials are chemically leached.

Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Flow: From Spent Battery to Resource Outputs

1. Collection & Sorting: spent lithium-ion batteries are gathered, sorted by chemistry and type, and residual charge is safely discharged.

2. Mechanical Shredding / Crushing: lithium-ion battery crushing and separate battery casings, separators, plastics removed.

3. Thermal Pre‑treatment (optional but common): remove organic binders and electrolytes, degas and stabilize black mass for safer chemical treatment.

4. Hydrometallurgical Leaching: dissolve valuable metals from black mass using acid + oxidizer under controlled conditions, converting metals into soluble salts.

5. Separation and Purification: through precipitation, solvent extraction, ion‑exchange or electrochemical methods — obtaining lithium salt, cobalt/nickel/manganese salts or oxides, copper, aluminum, etc.

6. Graphite Recovery: negative‑electrode graphite can be recovered via processes such as thermal treatment, washing, flotation or chemical cleaning to remove binders and electrolytes, yielding reclaimable graphite powder.

7. Final Outputs: purified lithium‑metal compounds (e.g., Li₂CO₃, Li salts), cathode‑grade metal oxides (NMC/NCA), recovered copper & aluminum foils, graphite powder.

Ready for reuse in new battery production or other industrial applications.
