Copper pyrometallurgy is the most widely used method for extracting copper from sulfide ores, accounting for nearly 80% of the world’s cathode copper production due to its high efficiency, strong adaptability and cost-effectiveness. The process typically consists of five key stages.
Step 1: Copper Concentrate

Copper ore undergoes crushing, grinding and flotation to produce a copper concentrate, removing waste rock and impurities efficiently.
Step 2: Smelting
At high temperatures, the concentrate is melted into a liquid state, and separation is achieved through oxidation reaction: copper enters matte while impurities transfer to slag. This process mainly produces two products: matte and slag.

Step 3: Converting
During converting, air or oxygen-enriched air is injected into the molten matte. Iron and sulfur are preferentially oxidized: oxidized iron combines with flux to form slag, which is then discharged; oxidized sulfur is mainly liberated from the system as sulfur dioxide off-gas. As iron and sulfur are continuously removed, the copper content in the molten phase gradually increases, eventually forming blister copper.
Step 4: Fire Refining

After tapping, blister copper proceeds to the fire refining process to further remove impurities and to adjust the state of the copper melt to make it suitable for casting into copper anodes.
Step 5: Copper Electrolytic Refining
Electrolytic refining uses anode copper cast by fire refining as the anode and pure copper sheets as the cathode. Both are placed in the copper electrolysis machine filled with electrolyte and energized. Upon electrification, copper at the anode dissolves and then deposits directionally on the cathode, finally producing high-purity cathode copper.
